Neuro-Linguistic Programming: NLP & Changing Your Programs for More Success and Better Stress Management
Using NLP to change your Life – Quickly
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming and may be one of the most useful, easy-to-apply tools out of modern psychology. NLP is great for stress management, anxiety, and phobias and helps in a wide range of areas: relationships, career, creativity, and communication. NLP can help us move out of comfort zones into a place where we can extract maximum juice out of life. The beauty of it is it’s not only used by coaches – you can also learn and apply the techniques for yourself at home, and quickly see results, unlike with some therapies. By working with your mindset and way of communication you can change the way you interact with the world and in this way change the results you get.
Re-Programming the Mind with NLP
We use our minds in every area of our lives. Our thoughts and feelings influence how we see what happens to us, how we make decisions, and how we respond to events and people. Because NLP is a powerful tool-kit working directly with the mind, it can help with any area of life. It takes a bit of time and effort to learn and practice NLP, but if you stick with it, you’ll start to see the benefits. In an NLP session, your life coach will ask you what in your life you want to change and what problems you want to shift out of.
After listening to you carefully and observing subtle cues as to how you are feeling, your NLP life coach will use different exercises with you to help discover how you see life, how you think it works. This will reveal your blocks and self-limiting beliefs: what’s holding you back from being where you want to be. For example, you may believe your situation is hopeless, or that you are helpless to do anything about it. You may think ‘I’m not as good as other people’, or ‘I never get anything right’ – and these are the thoughts that set you up for failure. Your NLP life coach will help you start to explore these limiting thoughts and beliefs so you can transform them.
Your NLP coach will also teach you new thought processes – while you sit back and relax. You will be given some exercises to take home with you so that you can settle into the new ‘groove’ of your changed neurological patterns as you go about your day-to-day life. Each session builds on the previous one as your coach listens to what changes you’ve noticed and you move on to the next thing you want to change.

Getting Started with NLP
To learn some of the techniques from books and practice them yourself, try ‘Get the Life you Want’ by NLP co-creator Richard Bandler, and ‘Unlimited Power’ by Tony Robbins. Or read up on it further online. If all this really grabs you and you want to go deeper and get confident with NLP, you could do an NLP training course and become an NLP practitioner. Practicing Successful Thinking & Changing Your Maps
The idea behind NLP is that being happy and successful isn’t a matter of ‘luck’. To thrive, you need to have a way of thinking and communicating that leads to success- and happiness-creating behavior. If you aren’t successful – and who of us is successful in every area of life? – then it means you have been practicing ways of thinking and communicating that lead to failure-producing behavior. Simple! What’s great about realizing this is that you see that it’s you that can change things – it’s no use blaming what’s happened to you in your life, or waiting for better days, because you are responsible for both your successes and failures.
Through NLP you can learn the ways of thinking and behaving of successful people – and practice them to transform your life and create more happiness. Translated, NLP means controlling the way we gather information from the outside world with our senses and make sense of that information through language. NLP practitioners believe that each of us has a unique map of the world. These maps have boundaries and territories that support or do not support our success and happiness: and these can be changed through using language – the way we describe and interpret the world to ourselves. Even the word ‘failure’ can mean ‘being a worthless person’, or it can mean ‘a new beginning, a fork in the road’; how you interpret it makes the difference between bouncing back from a setback and letting it discourage you further.
The Roots and Gates of NLP
NLP was developed in California in 1972 by John Grinder, an Assistant Linguistics Professor, and Richard Bandler, a Psychology undergraduate. Its roots go back further, to Fritz Perls, the originator of Gestalt therapy, to Virginia Satir (Family Therapy), Milton Erickson (the first therapist to use hypnosis medically), and academic Gregory Bateson. Anthony ‘Tony’ Robbins, an American life coach, self-help author and motivational speaker, learned NLP from Grinder and popularised it through his books. Famous names who use NLP include Oprah Winfrey, Tiger Woods and Bill Gates.
